Houston—Texas Federation for Republican Outreach Chairman, Bill Calhoun, today announced the launch of a campaign to encourage black voters in Texas to "Vote Republican."
"This campaign is the result of a lot of hard work by a lot of people starting first with my Vice Chairman, Mona Lisa Chambers. Mona Lisa is a tireless party worker who wears many hats and does not get nearly enough credit for all the work she does," Calhoun said.
The campaign's theme, "Come Home in 2012-Vote Republican" is a coordinated effort with other campaigns to maximize the Republican vote in certain counties by increasing the black vote. "The Democrat Party is on its heels trying to defend this administration's record, but there really is no defense. With historically high unemployment rates among all groups in the black community and with college students graduating, saddled with historically high debt and low prospects for finding a job, the idea of 4 more years is just a hard sell," said Calhoun.
The campaign was launched on Wednesday with a televised debate between Texas Senator Rodney Ellis (D) -Houston and Chairman Calhoun to be aired on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at 11:00 AM CDT on ABC-13 “Crossroads”, a weekly Community Affairs program hosted by long-time journalist Melanie Lawson.
On Thursday night, October 18, 2012, Chairman Calhoun and Vice-Chairman Chambers debated the Democrat Party Chairman and its Communications Press Secretary at Texas Southern University School of Public Affairs.
The campaign moves to Corpus Christi on Saturday, October 20, 2012 when Chairman Calhoun addresses a TEA Party rally in Corpus Christi. Then, it returns to Houston on Tuesday, October 23, 2012, when Chairman Calhoun and Young Republican and Conservatives of TSU Chairman Reginald Grant, Jr. appear on a Voter Empowerment Summit again at TSU with an estimated expected crowd of 250 students.
"These students are hungry for the truth and are tired of being lied to by the Democrat Party. We have a great opportunity to be the "light" in the time of political darkness", said Chairman Grant. The summit will be taped and beamed across the campus.
