Legislative Priorities Report for 1.8.21
Coming home from Washington, D.C., yesterday on the plane, I began trying to write this report and was simply unable to come up with anything to say that wouldn’t sound trite. Everything about the trip was surreal. Most of the people on the flight were Texans who had also attended the rally, including many of our wonderful activists from around the state. Representative Kyle Biedermann sat behind me, and we chatted about where we go from here. I told him I wasn’t sure what to say, and he reply was, “Just tell the truth.”
So, here is the truth. We are about to go through some difficult times, and our Legislative Priorities are more important than ever. At the rally, I met a young woman and her mother who had immigrated to this country from Eastern Europe. Her grandfather, a Christian, had been imprisoned and killed because he was a Christian. The rest of her family came to the United States because they knew that here they would be free to exercise their religious beliefs. “I am so worried,” she said. “I see happening here what happened in my country, and so I have to try to warn and educate people.”
In communist countries, religious freedom must be stamped out, because, in order to create slaves to the state, a population must be compliant. When someone believes in God, they have an identity and dignity, and see humans as more than resources or capital.
We must take Nancy Pelosi seriously when she says the House will have new rules that remove gender. Beyond the stupidity, that is a deliberate step to strip us of identity and nudge us along the way to seeing ourselves as only biological beings. A totalitarian state cannot afford for citizens to have any power, and removing realities such as “him,” “her,” “mother,” and “father,” allows the state to define who a person or family is, rather than acknowledging that we have natural rights given by a Creator God.
On the flight, a young man sitting a couple of seats away huddled up next to the window. My friend next to me attempted to chat with him, and he told her he was an anarchist and antifascist. He was clearly uncomfortable and avoided any further conversation with us, staring out the window the whole flight with his sweatshirt hood over his face. He has no idea what he is promoting or the resulting destruction to his own life.
On the other side of me was a homeschool mom, and when the plane landed, she broke out in song, with a beautiful voice, singing the national anthem. As most of the rest of the passengers joined in, I heard a joy, strength, and resolve that characterizes us as Texans.
We must not forget who we are, and what it was that brought that young woman and her family to our shores. In Texas, we believe in liberty, the Constitution, the rule of law, and the principles that our Republican Party Platform so beautifully expresses.
The Preamble summarizes this well:
“Affirming our belief in God, we still hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
Throughout the world, people dare to dream of freedom and opportunity. The Republican Party of Texas unequivocally defends that dream. We strive to preserve the freedom given to us by God, implemented by our Founding Fathers, and embodied in the Constitution. We recognize that the traditional family is the strength of our nation. It is our solemn duty to protect innocent life and develop responsible citizens. We understand that our economic success depends upon free-market principles. If we fail to maintain our sovereignty, we risk losing the freedom to live these ideals.”
More than ever before, our job as Texas Republicans is to educate and warn of the evil and lies of communism and the freedom and life offered by the type of government our Founders set up for us.
Here in Texas, we must hang on to our freedom of religion and other First Amendment rights, and ensure no losses of our Second Amendment, as that is what protects those rights.
To this end, we are rallying at the Capitol on Saturday. The rally begins at 2pm at 1201 Brazos in Austin (see map below). Chairman West will host, and members of the State Republican Executive Committee will participate, along with some special guests. We encourage you to come and bring friends who need to hear our message.
